Parent/Caregiver Class FAQs

Q  What is DBT-C (Dialectical Behavioral Therapy for Children)?

A  DBT-C is a child-focused adaptation of Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), originally developed by Dr. Marsha Linehan to help adults manage strong emotions. It teaches children skills for emotional regulation, distress tolerance, and communication. It is especially helpful for those with intense emotions or behaviors that impact family life and school.

Q  What will I learn in this course?

A  In this course, parents and caregivers learn to support their child’s emotional growth and respond calmly and effectively to big emotions and challenging behaviors. You’ll practice strategies to build a supportive, validating home where your child feels understood and encouraged to use coping skills.

Q  Who are the staff?

A  The course is led by two experienced and trained DBT clinicians.

Q  Why just parents and caregivers, why not my kid too?

A  Caregivers need support too! DBT-C views parents and caregivers as a child’s most important resource. Research shows it’s vital they have the skills to support themselves and respond effectively to their child. Since children need consistent coaching to practice skills, parents are best positioned to provide it. The goal is for caregivers to feel confident using DBT skills for themselves and their child to build lasting change.

Q  Why 10 weeks?

A  While 10 weeks may seem long, parents in our full IOP program report it’s just enough time to learn core DBT skills and practice them with support from coaches and peers. OUR goal is for parents to leave not only knowing the skills but feeling confident using them in real time.
